שלחן ערוך (“The Set Table”)<\/em><\/strong> – <\/em>A code of Jewish law, written in 1563 by R. Yosef Karo, a Sefardi rabbi, which became accepted as authoritative and normative with the addition of glosses incorporating Ashkenazi practice by Rema. Shulch<\/span>an Aruch<\/em> is actually a summary of Karo’s important, and much larger, halachic work, the Beit Yosef<\/em>. While in Shulchan Aruch<\/em> Karo provides the ultimate ruling without citing sources, the sources are brought in Beit Yosef<\/em>, as are dissenting opinions. Shulchan Aruch<\/em> was first printed in Venice in 1565; the first edition of Shulchan Aruch<\/em> in which Rema’s glosses appear, formally titled ha-Mappah (“The Tablecloth,” <\/em>i.e., for “The Set Table”<\/em>), is the Krakow edition of 1569-1571.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beit Yosef<\/em>, and in turn the Shulchan Aruבh,<\/em> was formally structured as a commentary on the Arbaah Turim<\/em> of R. Yaak<\/span>ov b. Asher (the Tur). As such it is organized according to the Tur, addressing laws in practical use according to four basic divisions: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
