The appellation ha-darshan probably pertains to this activity rather than preaching. He was active during the first half of the 11th century in Narbonne, Provence (southern France). Life Moshe ha-Darshan almost certainly headed a beit midrash in his home city,&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Moshe ha-Darshan<\/a> of Narbonne in <a href=\"http:\/\/trmarvin.org\/?encyclopedia=provence\" target=\"_self\" title=\"The term used by Jews to refer to the Jewish communities of what is today the southern third of modern France, encompassing the regions today called Provence, Languedoc, and the Rousillon. Major cities of Jewish Provence in the medieval period include Narbonne, Lunel, B&eacute;ziers, Montpellier, Perpignan, and Avignon, among others that where home to renowned&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Provence<\/a>, who was active during the first half of the 11th century. <em>Bereshit Rabbati<\/em> was known only by references to it until modernity, when a single Hebrew manuscript of it surfaced, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/midrash-be-reshit-rabati-nosad-al-sifro-shel-rabi-mosheh-ha-darshan\/oclc\/1151874013?referer=br&amp;ht=edition\">published by Chanokh Albeck in 1940<\/a>. It is an expansion of the material in <em>Bereshit Rabba<\/em> including material from other classic sources as well as, interestingly, works known from the Apochrypha&mdash;literature of antiquity, including material originally written in Hebrew, that was preserved by various Christian groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the manuscript was rediscovered, <em>Bereshit Rabbati<\/em> was largely known from a major medieval compilation of extracts intended to convert Jews and Muslims called <em>Pugio fidei (Dagger of Faith)<\/em>, compiled in the late 13th century by the fiery Dominican friar Ramon Mart&iacute; (Raymond Martini). The relationship between the Hebrew manuscript published by Albeck and the text from which Mart&iacute; was working is conjectural, as they are clearly not the same version. A working assumption is that the group of late mid<a href=\"http:\/\/trmarvin.org\/?encyclopedia=rashi\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Rashi - R. Shlomo Yitzchaki | &#1512;&#1513;&quot;&#1497; - &#1512;' &#1513;&#1500;&#1502;&#1492; &#1497;&#1510;&#1495;&#1511;&#1497; (c. 1040-1105, Troyes, northern France) is among the foremost Talmud and Tanach commentators, ushering in the classical period of line commentaries on foundational texts. He studied in the yeshivot of the Rhineland Valley (Mainz and Worms), the first centers of Jewish life in medieval&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">rashi<\/a>m attributed to <a href=\"http:\/\/trmarvin.org\/?encyclopedia=moshe-ha-darshan\" target=\"_self\" title=\"&#1502;&#1513;&#1492; &#1492;&#1491;&#1512;&#1513;&#1503; - Moshe ha-Darshan (11th cen., southern France) was a medieval compiler of midrash.
