On other terms used for Chumash and its books, see my <a href=\"https:\/\/trmarvin.org\/parsha-guides\/%D7%A1%D7%A4%D7%A8-%D7%91%D7%A8%D7%90%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%AA\/\">Introduction to Sefer Bereshit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Written Torah (&#1514;&#1493;&#1512;&#1492; &#1513;&#1489;&#1499;&#1514;&#1489;), the words of these five books have the highest degree of sanctity, in distinction to those books composed by prophecy (Neviim, or Prophets) and by <em>ruach ha-kodesh<\/em> (Ketuvim, or Writings). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Printed Chumashim are generally divided by sidra, more commonly called parashah (or <a href=\"http:\/\/trmarvin.org\/?encyclopedia=parsha\" target=\"_self\" title='The common meaning of parashah (plural: parshiyot; colloquially, \"parsha\") is the weekly Torah portion. The Torah (also called Chumash, or the first five books of the Bible) is divided into sections read cyclically. The beginning of Parashat Nitzavim in the Koren edition of Sefer Devarim (Deuteronomy). Reading Cycles There are two cycles for reading: (1)&hellip;' class=\"encyclopedia\">parsha<\/a>), followed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/trmarvin.org\/?encyclopedia=haftarah-2\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Haftarah refers to an additional selection of text from the Neviim (Prophets), the second division of books of Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible), read after the parashah (Torah portion of the week). The haftarah is thematically tied either to the parashah or events on the Jewish calendar. Seeking out the thematic connection is one of the&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">haftarah<\/a>, and sometimes include the five megillot as well. Many will include the Targum and <a href=\"http:\/\/trmarvin.org\/?encyclopedia=rashi\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Rashi - R. Shlomo Yitzchaki | &#1512;&#1513;&quot;&#1497; - &#1512;' &#1513;&#1500;&#1502;&#1492; &#1497;&#1510;&#1495;&#1511;&#1497; (c. 1040-1105, Troyes, northern France) is among the foremost Talmud and Tanach commentators, ushering in the classical period of line commentaries on foundational texts. He studied in the yeshivot of the Rhineland Valley (Mainz and Worms), the first centers of Jewish life in medieval&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Rashi<\/a>&rsquo;s commentary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the annual cycle, today the most common reading cycle, the entire Chumash is read every year.
